Three Canadian Cities Cracked the Top 10 of This Year

Three Canadian Cities Cracked the Top 10 of This Year's Global Livability Index

Great news! Three Canadian cities have made the top ten on this year’s list of the world’s most livable cities. Calgary, Alberta, tied with Zurich for third place, outranking the Swiss city in education and infrastructure. Vancouver placed fifth, and Toronto, Canada’s largest and most populous city, made it into eighth place.

Canada consistently ranks as one of the most stable and tolerant nations in the world. It is the only country with three cities in the top ten, indicating that the standard of living is relatively high. For this reason, Canada is often viewed as a desirable country for immigrants to settle in. In fact, Canada is aiming to welcome over 450,000 new permanent residents each year by 2024. To reach this goal, Canada offers over 100 immigration pathways for those who wish to obtain permanent resident status.

Becoming a Permanent Resident

Express Entry

One of the most common immigration pathways to permanent residence is the Express Entry application management system. Individuals that meet the requirements are given a score using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) and rated against each other. The first step for a candidate is to self-evaluate their eligibility. Then, eligible candidates can create a profile with Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to get their CRS score. This score is based on criteria such as work experience, language skills and education. The higher the score, the more likely a candidate is to receive an invitation to apply.

Provincial Nominee Program

Skilled immigrants may apply directly to a province through a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). All Canadian provinces besides Quebec and Nunavut have PNPs that work in alignment with IRCC. These programs allow provincial governments to select candidates they feel will be a good fit.
In addition to these programs, Canada has temporary foreign worker programs, student visas and visitor visas for those who want to experience Canada before applying for permanent residency.
